EL CABALLERO INTACHABLE

Monumento a Francisco Vicente Aguilera en Bayamo.

 

El 23 de junio de 1821, nace en Bayamo el patriota Francisco Vicente Aguilera, a quien José Martí calificó como "el millonario heroico, el caballero intachable, el padre de la República".

Dueño de una de las mayores fortunas del oriente de Cuba, desde 1851 conspira contra el dominio colonial español, en 1867 lo eligen presidente del Comité Revolucionario de Bayamo y, un año después, de la Junta Revolucionaria de Oriente.

Aunque partidario de una esmerada preparación para comenzar la guerra, no vacila en secundar el precipitado levantamiento del 10 de octubre de 1868.

Está entre los más firmes defensores de la unidad en las filas patrióticas, y acepta disciplinado los nombramientos de secretario de la Guerra, vicepresidente de la República, General en Jefe del Ejército de Oriente o comisionado del Gobierno, para tratar de unir a la emigración y acelerar el envío de expediciones.

Muere pobre y enfermo, en Estados Unidos, el 22 de febrero de 1877, luego de fallidos intentos para regresar a la manigua.

En el pórtico del antiguo cementerio de Bayamo, ubicado en el parque Retablo de los Héroes, fueron sepultados los restos de Francisco Vicente Aguilera, al ser trasladados desde Nueva York.

 

Sobre la tumba de Aguilera se encuentra un monumento funerario, que fue colocado como homenaje al ilustre patricio.

A RED LION IN THE SEA

 

Some years ago I was talking to a Dutch friend, and I explained to him about the geographic characteristics of my country, Cuba.

I said that the island is long and narrow, and some people compare it with a partially submerged crocodile.   That’s why the island is also known as “The Long Green Lizard” (with eyes of stone and water, as written in the popular poem of Cuban national poet Nicolás Gillén).

He was listening with attention, and then told me that also the map of Holland is frequently compared with an animal, in this case the king of the jungle, the feared Lion.

He told me that looking very carefully the map of Holland it’s possible to see the figure of a lion coming out of the sea.   Many times I tried to see the hidden lion in the map, but finally I surrender and assumed that my Dutch friend was wrong about that.

Anyway during all these years I was always fascinated with the mental picture of an angry lion coming out of the sea.

But recently the well-known Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo (Camaguey, 1950), turned into reality that fantastic vision, when he installed the sculpture of a big red lion on the reef of Havana’s malecón, the famous avenue that kiss the Atlantic Ocean in the Cuban capital.

This lion is one of the many sculptures installed in different places of the city, during the giant art festival known as “Bienal de la Habana”.

Suddenly I remembered the story of the map of Holland representing a lion coming out of the sea, and made a search in the internet trying to find out information about this subject.

Thanks to the magic of the World Wide Web, I realized that my friend was right.   He was mentioning the Dutch Lion or “Leo Belgicus”, Latin name for Netherlandic Lion.

It refers to an ancient map of the Low Countries (the current day Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium), drawn in the shape of a lion.

According to Wikipedia, the earliest “Leo Belgicus” was drawn by the Austrian cartographer Michael Aitzinger in 1583.  The motif was inspired by the heraldic figure of the lion, occurring in the coat of arms of several of the Netherlands:  Brabant, Flanders, Holland, Limburg, Luxembourg, and Zeeland.

One thing led to the other, and again I learned many interesting things thanks to the red lion of the Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo and the Dutch antique maps, where art, science and poetry come together as one.

DEDICADA AL DÍA DE LOS PADRES

FERIA DE DIONE ARTESANÍA EN BAYAMO.

Como saludo al Día de los Padres la empresa Dione Artesanía Industria de Granma organizó este sábado en la Calle de la Excelencia de Bayamo una feria especial, la cual incluyó la expo-venta de artículos útiles para el hogar y otros productos de gran demanda popular.

Oscar Torres Martínez, director de la entidad en la provincia, señaló que se trata de la tercera actividad de este tipo que realizan este año en el mismo sitio ubicado en el reparto Jesús Menéndez, y en todas las ocasiones han tenido una gran asistencia de público y favorable satisfacción de los clientes.

El directivo agregó que los 13 municipios de Granma presentaron una amplia gama de productos, representativos de cada uno de los territorios.

Entre los artículos más demandados estaban los corrales para niños, cunas de diferentes modelos y tamaños, sillitas sanitarias, taburetes para niños y adultos, juegos de comedor y de sala, artesanías y productos de fundición como calderos.

El apoyo de la empresa de gastronomía de Bayamo permitió la venta de una gran variedad de dulces, galletas, sorbetos y panes especiales, además de la oferta de comida criolla y bebidas en locales habilitados para la ocasión.

Uno de los kioskos más visitados fue el de la empresa de servicios técnicos, personales y del hogar, en el cual se podían adquirir aditamentos para el hogar como servilletas, paños de cocina, cortinas, cubrecamas, mosquiteros, forros para colchones y toallas.

En este local también se ofertaban artículos elaborados por las trabajadoras del “Proyecto Ternura”, una atelier que dedica sus confecciones a las madres embarazadas, bebés y niños y niñas hasta los 12 años de edad.
